Many website problems are really server problems: database errors, timeouts, slow pages and surprise downtime. I set up and tune servers on AWS and other cloud hosts with Nginx or Apache, PHP-FPM and MySQL or MariaDB, and manage DNS, SSL and CDN through Cloudflare.

One example: two WordPress sites on AWS EC2 kept going down with database errors. The cause was PHP-FPM starting too many workers on a small server, so the database ran out of memory. I capped the workers, added automatic database recovery and a page cache, and the sites have been stable since.

FAQ

Servers & hosting: common questions

My site shows “Error establishing a database connection”. Can you fix it?
Yes. On small servers this is often the database running out of memory. I find the cause in the logs, tune PHP-FPM and the database, and add recovery so it does not come back.
Can you move my site to cheaper or faster hosting?
Yes. I move sites between hosts with a full backup, a staging test and a DNS switch planned for zero downtime.
Can you upgrade my site to a newer PHP version on Kinsta, SiteGround or WP Engine?
Yes. Managed hosts let you change the PHP version from their dashboard, but old plugins and themes can break on a newer version. I copy the site to staging, switch PHP there, fix or replace whatever throws errors, then switch the live site and watch the error log afterwards.
Which hosting is right for my website?
It depends on traffic, budget and who will look after it. A managed WordPress host suits most business sites. A tuned AWS or cloud server makes sense for higher traffic, custom apps or several sites on one server. I recommend one after looking at your current setup and costs.
